Biodegradable substances in wood protection

چکیده
Timber is a sustainable, economical, completely renewable, CO2-neutral organic material, which requires less energy to process than other construction materials. Wood is also a strong, aesthetically pleasing, and very durable material when properly maintained and used. However, under certain conditions of exposure or use — particularly when it becomes wet — wood may be rapidly decomposed due to organic decay or natural weathering agents. Decay is caused by the action of fungal microorganisms under adequate moisture and oxygen conditions for an extended period of time (Sell and Leukens 1971). The various effects of combinations of light, water, mechanical forces and heat, are covered in the blanket term weathering (Wood finishing... 1975). The deterioration of wood is thus caused by a combination of biological, chemical, and physical processes, with water playing an important role in every case. The decay and discoloration caused by fungi, and to a lesser extent by bacteria, are major sources of quality loss in both timber production and the various uses of wood. In order to ensure a long, useful, and safe life, timber needs protection from the hazards of fungal decay and weathering.

Mechanical, Thermomechanical and Reprocessing Behavior of Green Composites from Biodegradable Polymer and Wood Flour
The rising concerns in terms of environmental protection and the search for more versatile polymer-based materials have led to an increasing interest in the use of polymer composites filled with natural organic fillers (biodegradable and/or coming from renewable resources) as a replacement for traditional mineral inorganic fillers. At the same time, the recycling of polymers is still of fundame...

متن کاملFeasibility of hybrid bioreactor in the treatment of wastewater containing slowly biodegradable substances
Slowly biodegradable substances and recalcitrant pose a serious threat to the environment owing to their bio-resistant nature. With the increase in industrial activities, more and more quantity of these substances is being discharged through wastewater. The biodegradability potential of such substances can be anticipated from low BOD/COD ratio. Traditionally, the wastewater containing recalcitr...
متن کاملDimensional Stabilization of Wood Treated with Tall Oil Dissolved in Different Solvents
Many water repellents, such as classic wood preservatives have the disadvantage of being harmful to the environment. Therefore, interest increased even eco-friendly, or of biodegradable material. Natural oils (tallow, linseed oil), appears to be capable of preventing the wood water uptake. However, the total amount of oil required to achieve a high penetration of the sapwood. The aim of this st...
